Self storage units are a great way to store extra belongings, seasonal items, sentimental possessions, and old family belongings that you want to keep but don’t have room for in your home. Then, one day an idea comes across your mind about the storage facility that you drive past every day but don’t bother to look at as you’ve become immune to the idea. Self storage is sometimes an afterthought but it’s becoming increasingly more popular every year. For someone who hasn’t rented a storage unit before, storage units require more planning and organization than one might realize. Without proper organization, your storage unit can quickly become cluttered and overwhelming to navigate. Here are some organization hacks for women’s self storage units to keep your items neat and easily accessible for when soccer practice or Christmas roll around.

1. Purge and Categorize
Before organizing your storage unit, start by going through all of your items and purging what you no longer need. Yes, that includes the tupperware that was passed on down to you from your great aunt Susan. This will help you determine how much storage space you need and it will make it easier to organize the items you do want to keep. Once you’ve purged your items, categorize them into groups such as clothing, holiday decorations, home goods, kids belongings, etc.

2. Invest in Shelving and Storage Containers
Shelving can be a great way to make use of vertical space in your self storage unit. Invest in sturdy, freestanding shelves that can hold heavy items like boxes or books. We usually recommend the heavy duty metal shelving that can be found on Amazon. You can also use wire shelving to store items like shoes or purses. In addition to shelving, invest in clear plastic storage containers to easily see what’s inside and stack them neatly. Choose containers that are the same size to make them easier to stack.

3. Label Everything
Labels will save you time and energy in the long run when searching for items. Label both the contents of your storage containers and the shelves they are stored on. You can use a label maker or simply write on a piece of masking tape and stick it to the container or shelf. Be specific with your labeling so you know exactly what’s inside each container. You’d be surprised how easy it is to fill up five containers that say “Kitchen”. Then, when you need to find your canning pot, you’ll be searching high and low for it.

4. Store Strategically
Keep frequently used items at the front of your unit for easy access. Store heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on top to prevent crushing. When packing boxes, be sure to fill them to capacity to prevent them from collapsing or crushing. You can also use packing materials like bubble wrap or packing peanuts to fill any gaps in boxes. It’s important to be strategic about maximizing the space within your storage unit. Spaces will fill up quicker than you think if you choose otherwise.

5. Use Space-Saving Hacks
Use vacuum-sealed bags for bulky items like bedding and clothing. These bags can save a lot of space, especially if you’re storing items like comforters or winter jackets. Hang items like clothing and accessories on hooks or hangers to save floor space. If you do choose this route, be sure to buy large garbage bags, poke a hole in the bottom, then fish the heads of your hangers through the hole. The trash bags will protect your belongings from dust and dirt. You can also use the backs of doors to store items like jewelry or scarves.

Organizing a self storage unit takes a little bit of time and effort, but it’s worth it in the long run. By purging, categorizing, investing in shelving and storage containers, labeling everything, storing strategically, and using space-saving hacks, you can keep your storage unit neat and organized. You will be thanking yourself for the extra effort you put in later on. The next time you need to access your belongings, you’ll be able to find exactly what you’re looking for quickly and easily. By following these tips you won’t have to worry about tearing up your storage unit and your belongings will be kept safe and clean.
